Real experiences from real travelers
The Nikko All Area Pass was a lifesaver! We used it for the train from Asakusa and all the buses up to Lake Chuzenji. The autumn colors were breathtaking. Redeeming the voucher at Asakusa was quick and the staff spoke excellent English.
We booked the private day tour from Tokyo. Our driver, Ken, was fantastic and very knowledgeable about the Toshogu Shrine history. It was a bit pricey but worth it for the comfort of a private car, especially with the heavy traffic during leaf season.
Visiting Nikko in winter is underrated. The snow on the shrines is beautiful and there are no crowds. The 2-day pass was perfect for us. We stayed overnight in Kinugawa Onsen which was included in the train coverage. Highly recommended!
The Tobu Railway system is very efficient. We upgraded to the Spacia X limited express for the way there—definitely pay the extra fee for the comfort. The pass itself covered all our local travel. Kegon Falls is a must-see.
We bought the Edo Wonderland tickets through this site. My kids loved the ninja show and the samurai training. It's a bit of a bus ride from the station but the free shuttle makes it easy. A great break from just looking at temples.
The Toshogu Shrine is overwhelming in its beauty. We took the walking tour which helped us understand the significance of the carvings. The guide was patient and knew the best spots for photos away from the main crowds.
Good value for money. Just be aware that the pass covers the 'base fare' for the train. If you want the fast train (Limited Express), you pay extra at the station. Once you understand that, it's a great deal.
We did the cycling tour in Oku-Nikko. It was the highlight of our Japan trip. Cycling around the lake was peaceful and the air was so fresh. The guide brought us to a hidden temple we would never have found on our own.
Everything you need to know for your journey
The 'World Heritage Area Pass' (2 days) covers the round-trip train from Tokyo and local buses to the shrines/temples only. The 'All Area Pass' (4 days) adds coverage for the bus ride up the mountain to Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and Yumoto Onsen, plus lake cruises and other perks.
No. The pass covers the base fare for the train ride. If you wish to ride the fast 'Spacia' or 'Revaty' Limited Express trains, you must purchase a separate Limited Express ticket (approx. 1,400-1,600 JPY) at the station or online.
Most vouchers must be exchanged at the Tobu Tourist Information Center at Asakusa Station in Tokyo. Some newer digital passes can be activated on your smartphone—check your specific product confirmation for details.
One day is sufficient for the main World Heritage shrines and a quick lunch. However, if you want to see the waterfalls and lake in Oku-Nikko or visit Edo Wonderland, we highly recommend 2 days or an overnight stay.
You can use the JR Pass to take the Shinkansen to Utsunomiya and then the JR Nikko Line to Nikko. However, the Tobu Nikko Pass is generally more convenient as it departs directly from Asakusa and includes the local bus network, which the JR Pass does not cover.
Nikko is in the mountains and is generally 5-10°C cooler than Tokyo. Wear layers, and bring a waterproof jacket. Comfortable walking shoes are mandatory as there are many gravel paths and stone stairs.
Vegetarian options (Shojin Ryori or Buddhist cuisine) are available near the shrines, particularly yuba (tofu skin) dishes which are a local specialty. However, verify ingredients as dashi (fish stock) is common.
The main shrine areas have many stairs and gravel paths, making wheelchair access difficult. However, buses are generally accessible, and there are barrier-free routes for some parts of the town. Private tours with vehicles are recommended for mobility-impaired travelers.
Yes, both Tobu-Nikko and JR Nikko stations have coin lockers. If these are full, the tourist information center often provides luggage storage for a fee.
Yes, you can use IC cards for the extra fare if you don't have a pass. However, using the Nikko Pass is significantly cheaper for tourists as the bus fares to Lake Chuzenji are quite expensive otherwise.
Mid-October to early November is the peak season for autumn foliage (koyo). The colors start at high elevations (Yumoto/Chuzenji) in early October and move down to the town/shrines by November.
Major hotels and larger restaurants accept cards, but many smaller souvenir shops, street food stalls, and temple ticket counters still prefer cash. Always carry sufficient Yen.
